Yet for most families, quality schools remain equally important. In Orlando, where nationally ranked hospital systems intersect with diverse school districts, finding a balance between the two is possible with the right guidance.

How Orlando’s Neighborhoods Accommodate Physician Families

Proximity to hospitals is a critical driver of housing choice. AdventHealth Orlando, Orlando Health’s downtown campus, and Lake Nona Medical City anchor the region’s healthcare economy. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Orlando’s average commute time is about 29 minutes—close to the national average. But for physicians, shaving that to 15 minutes can mean the difference between attending a family dinner and missing it entirely.

Lake Nona

Known as “Medical City,” Lake Nona hosts Nemours Children’s Hospital, the Orlando VA Medical Center, and UCF’s College of Medicine. The community is designed for professionals with families, offering A-rated schools and master-planned amenities.

A Real-World Example: Choosing Winter Park

Not long ago, I had the privilege of helping a physician relocating from Texas with his spouse and two school-aged children. Initially, they considered Lake Nona for its proximity to the VA Medical Center, but after touring a few neighborhoods, Winter Park captured their hearts. While the homes were certainly pricier than other options, Winter Park offered a unique blend of modern convenience and old-Florida charm. The family valued being able to walk to Park Avenue for dining and shopping, while also having access to highly rated schools within the Orange County district. In the end, they chose a renovated bungalow near Rollins College, striking a balance between professional practicality and lifestyle enrichment. For them, the extra investment in Winter Park was about creating the kind of day-to-day environment they wanted their children to grow up in—vibrant, walkable, and connected.
